France: Appeal of Eric Zemour’s conviction for racist insults against Hafsatu list upheld

Eric Zemour was convicted by the Paris Court of Appeal on Thursday, March 28, of racist insults for naming former Canal+ columnist Hapsatou Sy as an “insult to France” in 2018. French media reported. .

In its decision, the court confirmed the decision made by the first instance in January 2023, Franceinfo specifies.

A criminal court found the far-right polemicist guilty of “public insults on account of origin, nationality, nation, race or religion” and fined him 4,000 euros. Eric Zemur was also ordered to pay 3,000 euros in restitution and 2,000 euros in legal fees, the same media reported.

The appeals court also ordered the founder of the Reconquest party to pay an additional 3,000 euros to the Hapsatu list for procedural costs, according to the same source.

If Hafsatu Si welcomed the court’s decision, Eric Zemur, for his part, said that he intended to appeal to the Court of Cassation, the French media specifies.

In a press release, he condemned “these politicized judges (who) want to condemn (his) French intimidation”. “The political judges accepted Fillon, they will not accept me,” he concluded.
