US destroys 4 drones launched by Houthis to target ships in Red Sea

AA / Ankara / Faruk Zorlu

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday that the US has destroyed unmanned aerial systems launched by Yemen’s Houthi group.

“Between 18:00 and 22:56 (Sanaa time) on March 28, and for the second day in a row, US Central Command successfully destroyed four unmanned aerial systems (UAS) launched by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen. CENTCOM said on X.

“These planes targeted a coalition ship and a US warship and were engaged in defensive operations in the Red Sea,” the same source said, adding that no injuries or damage were reported.

CENTCOM said it had determined the weapons posed an “imminent threat” to US Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region.

“These measures are being taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for the United States Navy and merchant ships,” CENTROM recalled.

Yemen’s Houthi group has targeted cargo ships in the Red Sea owned or operated by Israeli companies or carrying goods to and from Israel in a show of solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli attack since October 7.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently announced the creation of Operation Prosperity Guardian, a multinational mission to counter Houthi attacks.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s busiest oil and fuel shipping routes.
