Washington: “We call on Israel to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza”

AA / Istanbul / Raşa Evrensel

The US State Department said on Thursday that Washington is urging Israel to facilitate the flow of more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

This is clear from the comment of Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the State Department, regarding the order of the International Court of Justice, which provides for additional preventive measures within the framework of the “crime of genocide” procedure initiated by South Africa.

“We don’t have a position at this time because our department is still reviewing the text of the order, but we are calling on Israel to facilitate more aid to the Gaza Strip,” Miller said.

The International Court of Justice this Thursday ordered Tel Aviv to immediately take all concrete and effective measures to ensure the delivery of the necessary humanitarian aid to the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The ICJ on Thursday, at South Africa’s request, ordered additional preventive measures, including, in particular, the unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza as part of the genocide proceedings against Israel.

The court said it was referring to the new measures because the temporary measures specified in the previous order “do not fully respond to the consequences arising from the evolution of the situation”.

In violation of international law, Israel has restricted humanitarian access to Gaza, including by land, leading to shortages of food, medicine and fuel and creating a famine that has killed children and the elderly in the enclave it has been under siege for 17 years. and which is inhabited by approximately 2.3 million Palestinians who live in catastrophic conditions.

Israel has also been accused by the Palestinians and the international community of using “starvation” in Gaza as a weapon, which constitutes a “war crime”, and the United Nations has called on it to open ground checkpoints in the humanitarian aid strip before then. Famine destroys its population.

Since Israel launched its war on Gaza, 32,552 Palestinians have been killed and an estimated 74,980 others injured, according to the latest report released by the Palestinian Health Authority, amid massive destruction and shortages of basic necessities.

Earlier this month, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East, UNRWA, said that “hunger is everywhere” in Gaza.

International organizations, including UN agencies, are calling for a ceasefire and increased access to humanitarian aid to address the shortages that are causing the disease to spread in the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s war has forced 85% of Gaza’s population to move inside the territory, and 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.

Israel is being prosecuted at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the crime of genocide. An order issued in January ordered Tel Aviv to cease acts of a genocidal nature and to take measures to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.
