The High Constitutional Court (HCC) disqualified Ambatofinandrahana (Centre)-elect and National Assembly Speaker Christine Razanamahasoa on Thursday, March 28, 48 hours after her request was filed. Parliamentary group.

The parliamentary group of the IRD (the ruling party) notes in its demand “significant and repeated deviations from the MP’s political statements and positions” regarding the line of conduct of their parliamentary group.

The group reports a “deviation” that threatens “stability and democracy in Madagascar.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Christine Razanamahasoa, accompanied by a delegation consisting mainly of elected opposition representatives, arrived at the HCC headquarters in Ambohidah, Antananarivo, to present the defence.

Amid political tensions leading up to the November 2023 presidential election, a number of the National Assembly called for the electoral process to be suspended.

During a meeting in the Lower House on Saturday, March 23, Christine Razanamahasoa once again openly criticized the regime of President Andriy Rajoelina. He then drew the ire of his political party and his colleagues, who issued multiple warnings before demanding disqualification.

At the same time, the HCC announced the disqualification of former Senate President Herimanana Razafimahefa following a request from October 2023 filed by the current Number One of the Malagasy Upper House, Richard Ravalomanana.

The former president of the senate said he would resign as interim president of the republic in September 2023 before changing his mind and claiming he had received death threats.

A turn that was highly criticized by his senatorial colleagues and led to his dismissal.

As Madagascar’s May 29 legislative elections approach, the ruling party’s camp has been rocked by internal tensions.
