UN: “There is no safe place for civilians in Gaza”

AA / Hamilton – Canada / Mervé Aydogan

The United Nations declared on Thursday that there is “no safe place for civilians in Gaza” after a video was released showing Israeli soldiers shooting two apparently unarmed Palestinians before killing them. They buried me with a bulldozer.

A video released by Qatari news channel Al Jazeera showed the victims walking along the Gaza strip, waving a white cloth – the international sign of surrender – before being shot dead by Israeli soldiers.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric called the video “shocking” at a press conference.

“What we’re seeing is that it underscores what we’ve been saying all along, that there is no safe place for civilians in Gaza, and it’s clear that the circumstances warrant a thorough investigation,” he said.

It is still unclear when the executions took place, but the footage emerged days after another video showed an Israeli drone tracking and attacking four Palestinians in Khan Younis, who were killed in a series of attacks.

Regarding additional interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the context of South Africa’s case against Israel on charges of “genocide”, Dujarric noted that the court is independent.

“We believe in principle that all member states should respect and implement court decisions,” he added.

The ICJ issued additional interim measures on Thursday, requiring Israel to take necessary measures to provide essential services and refrain from any actions that would violate the rights of Palestinian civilians.

Israel has launched a deadly military offensive in the Palestinian territories of Gaza following an October 7 cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas that reportedly killed up to 1,200 people.

Since then, at least 32,552 Palestinians have been killed and at least 74,980 injured in the context of massive destruction and shortages of basic necessities.

Israel’s war, now in its 174th day, has displaced 85% of Gaza’s population due to acute shortages of food, drinking water and medicine, and 60% of the Gaza enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.

Israel will be brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for genocide. An interim ruling issued in January ordered Tel Aviv to end acts of genocide and take steps to provide humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
