Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a phone call to the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday that it is critical that the U.S. Congress quickly approve a new military aid package for Ukraine.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has for months blocked a bill that would provide $60 billion in military and financial aid to Ukraine.
“The rapid approval of US aid to Ukraine by Congress is vital. We recognize that there are different opinions in the House on how to proceed, but the key is to keep the issue of aid to Ukraine as a unifying factor,” Zelenskiy said on Platform
Ukrainian troops are at a disadvantage on the battlefield, suffering from artillery ammunition shortages without U.S. help, stalling in Congress and with the European Union failing to deliver promised munitions on time.
In a statement, Zelenskiy said he updated Johnson on the situation on the battlefield and also spoke of a “dramatic increase in Russian air terror.”
Last Friday, Russia conducted its largest airstrike on Ukraine’s energy system since its February 2022 invasion, damaging power plants at a major dam and causing blackouts for more than a million people.
