France/Storm Nelson: Seven departments are on orange alert, with gusts of 130 km/h expected near the coast.

Six French departments were on an orange alert for strong winds on Thursday, while a seventh is on an orange high tide alert as Hurricane Nelson hits western France, Meteo-France said.

An orange Violent Wind Alert applies to Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor, Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime, while the Var department is placed on an orange Waves Submersion Alert.

“The rainy and windy system that affected the west and center of the country last night moved to eastern regions at 6am. Southwesterly winds strengthened in the Mediterranean. Further west, the heart of Depression Nelson is located at 6am. South of Ireland. Winds begin to strengthen over the Breton and North Atlantic on the coasts,” explained Météo-France in its bulletin published at 8:03 a.m. (local time) on Thursday morning.

And to continue: “This Thursday, the passage of depression ‘Nelson’ across the south of England will be accompanied by a strong gust of wind in the north-west of the country. In the sections placed on the orange alert, the expected values ​​are around 120 to 130 km/h along the coast and 100 or At times up to 110 km/h over land, especially during storms.The strongest storms are expected in the afternoon.

Depression Nelson shook the Vendée overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, especially the island of Yue. About fifty interventions have mobilized firefighters since 8 p.m., including about ten on the island of Yeux, reports France Bleu.

“Roofs are torn off, trees are down and bay windows are broken,” the island’s mayor told France Bleu Loire Océan. A total of sixty houses have been affected, and one area is without electricity. Crossings across the island will potentially be disrupted this Thursday.
