Faced with controversy, French synagogue cancels conference with IDF soldiers

AA/Paris

A conference in the presence of two Israeli army intelligence officers, organized by a French synagogue, was canceled by its organizers due to heated arguments.

The event was to be held on Thursday evening at the Levallois-Perret Synagogue in the department of Aux-des-Seines, with the theme “After October 7: Assessments and Perspectives”.

Many individuals were offended by the holding of such an event when “32,000 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army,” as Seine-Saint-Denis LFI MP Thomas Portes wrote in a message shared on social network X in which he claims. to contact the prefect.

“I contacted the prefect with a request to ban this conference. “While more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army and hunger is used as a weapon of war, France must ban these meetings that glorify the massacre of the Palestinian people,” a French elected official said on “X.”

The daily newspaper Le Parisien, in an article published during the day on Wednesday, reported that the conference was canceled by its organizers because of the controversy caused by the invitation of the Israeli soldiers and “in the interest of appeasement”.

The event was condemned by many French elected officials and pro-Palestinian activists, and the telephone exchange in the city of Levallois experienced a “tidal wave” of calls, according to Le Parisien.

An elected official from the city of Grand Harmon, Ismael Boujekada, also welcomed the cancellation, recalling on “X” that he had contacted the prefectural authorities himself.

“We will prosecute all those who promote the despicable acts committed against the Palestinian people,” he wrote in his post, repeating an article in Le Parisien about the cancellation of the meeting.

In an article published on its website, the French Union of Jews for Peace (UJFP) called the Levallois-Pérez synagogue initiative a “scandal”, asserting that it amounted to “an apology for a crime against humanity”.

“In the midst of a genocidal war, war criminals will report their abuse in a place of worship, with everyone’s knowledge,” the association stressed, before wondering the French government’s reaction, “if foreign army officers are in a state of war. Is he giving a lecture in a mosque or even a church? “.

The UJFP also questioned the silence of the French authorities, despite being “vigilant”, in the face of the protests.

“We Jews, who are driven by the values of solidarity, strongly condemn this promotion of criminal and genocidal practices by the Israeli government, as well as the complicity of the French government in this regard,” concluded the national coordination of the UJFP.
