Macron says EU-Mercosur deal negotiated today is ‘very bad’

During his visit to Brazil on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that a potential trade deal between the European Union and Mercosur, in its current form, is a “very bad deal” and that further work on the climate issue is needed .

“As it is currently negotiated, it is a very bad deal, for you and for us,” Macron told business leaders in Sao Paulo, during a three-day visit to Brazil, amid negotiations for a trade deal between the European Union and Mercosur. .

“There is nothing that takes into account the issue of biodiversity and climate, nothing,” he said. “We will sign a new agreement in light of our goals and reality, a trade agreement responsible for development, climate and biodiversity.”

While Brazil has said it is ready to sign the deal, France has repeatedly expressed reservations and said its farmers objected to a scenario that could allow imports, particularly of beef, that do not meet stringent European standards.

“We still have time,” Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said at the same event. “It is true that we missed an opportunity at the end of last year, but we must not give up on this agreement.”

Haddad added that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva “invested a lot, a lot of his time” in this agreement last year and “will continue to invest in a closer relationship with the European Union.”

Macron also called for more direct investment by Brazilian companies in France and said the two countries could cooperate on investments in other markets, such as Africa.

“We have to go much faster, much stronger, much further,” Macron said.
