Mattarella underlines in his message to the Pope the need for dialogue

The president congratulated Francisco on 11 years of pontificate

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent a message to Pope Francis this Tuesday (19th) to congratulate him on his 11 years of pontificate, celebrated on March 13, and to underline the need for dialogue to resolve problems of the world.

“On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the solemn beginning of the Pontificate, I wish to address you my most sincere wishes for good well-being and a fruitful continuation of your high magisterium”, begins the text.

Mattarella underlined that, over the last year, Francis’ incessant appeals “for the protection of the needy, the marginalized, those suffering from conflicts and violence, and for peace, have offered food for thought to those who are sincerely engaged in the search of solutions inspired by the fundamental principles of international law and the criteria of justice and authentic fairness”.

Furthermore, he underlined the need for dialogue between believers and non-believers to solve the many problems of the world.

“Faced with the main challenges of our time – not only wars, but also growing economic and social inequalities, environmental risks and the ethical repercussions of the use of artificial intelligence – believers and non-believers are called to dialogue with each other, to identify responses consistent with the protection of human dignity and the promotion, in every area and circumstance, of the common good”, he warned.

Finally, Mattarella recalled that a few weeks ago the 95th anniversary of the Lateran Pacts and the 40th anniversary of the Republican Concordat were celebrated, historical objectives which consolidate “even more the fruitful collaboration between the Holy See and Italy”.

“I would like to express my profound gratitude to him for his concern for the Italian people, also demonstrated by the apostolic journeys he is preparing to undertake to Venice, Verona and Trieste”, he concluded.

Jorge Bergoglio celebrated 11 years of pontificate last Wednesday (13th) on an anniversary marked by the pain of the wars that affect the world, such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East, and by incessant appeals for peace. At 87 years old, the Argentine is one of the longest-lived Pontiffs. .
