A US intelligence report found that unguided aerial bombs, known as “dumb bombs” (as opposed to “smart bombs”, which are guided) accounted for about half of the air-to-ground munitions used by Israel in its attacks on Gaza.
CNN released details of the report Thursday, citing three sources.
According to the report, 40% to 45% of the 29,000 air-to-ground munitions used by Israel in its attacks on Gaza were unguided bombs, with the rest precision-guided bombs.
The same source indicates that unguided bombs pose a greater threat to civilians, especially in a densely populated area like Gaza, because they are less accurate and do not target a specific area. And clarifying that Israel uses these munitions, which explains the large number of civilian casualties.
In this context, experts confirmed to CNN that the use of unguided bombs contradicts Israel’s argument that it is trying to reduce the number of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip.
Brian Kastner, chief crisis advisor for Amnesty International’s crisis response programme, stressed that he was deeply shocked and concerned by Israel’s use of unguided bombs, saying it was a “huge problem that harms civilians”.
On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said that Israel is beginning to lose international support for its indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needs to replace his government to find a lasting solution.
