American figure skaters Chock and Bates won the 2024 World Ice Dancing Championships

On Saturday, March 23, the second day of ice dancing competition took place at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, Canada. The 2024 World Cup is the first for the Diana Davis-Gleb Smolkin couple under the flags of the new national team. And I must say that after the first day of the competition, the duo was not close to significant achievements.

12th place after the rhythm dance for Davis-Smolkin is an opportunity to deliver routine post-skate phrases about preparation, points, etc.

– It’s our first world championship, we didn’t think we’d have the best marks this season. We even thought that the scores would be a little lower, but we were ready for it,” Diana said after the first performance.

She attributed these modest results to the fact that it was only the first tournament after the break and to her partner and husband:

— This is our first season after a break, so we decided not to experiment too much and take risks, but in the future we would like to do something more daring. After the European Championships, we changed a lot in the rhythm dance, because we wanted to add speed, change a few ligaments and work on the choreography a little, ”noted Gleb Smolkin.

It must be said that the first interesting tournament for Davis-Smolkin was also not very brilliant – 189.46 points and eighth place at the European Championships in Kaunas.

As a result, the duet of the daughter of Eteri Tutberidze and the son of a famous actor received a place at the beginning of the second warm-up. Not the strongest or even the penultimate, which is somewhere near the highest places.

For the World Championships, the skaters decided to renew their costumes by renting Swan Lake. A small styling detail was removed from Gleb Smolkin and Diana stopped skating in an almost real ballet tutu in Montreal.

The rental result is 64.13 points, the duo’s top rating for rental. Not really more than a plus compared to the Loisia Demougeau/Théo Le Mercier duo of the France team. Against 64.09 for the French pair.

Davis-Smolkin’s final scores for the performance were 113.88 points, second in the free skate and a total of 188.34 points. The second is temporary. but there are 11 pairs ahead. This is the level of figure skaters at the World Championships.

This couple was happy with themselves after skating in the mixed zone. Gleb Smolkin said:

— We are proud of ourselves during this World Championship. We showed the best rhythms and free dances of our season. We managed to combine everything we worked on, and it’s great that it happened during the World Championship, the last and most important competition of the year,” Smolkin was quoted as saying by “Championship” .

At the same time, Gleb Smolkin noted that next season he and his partner will try to develop further and look for new and interesting numbers for the concept. In short, this is the result of the first competitive season.

Well, the battle for the championship title was on another level. Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are second with 219.68. And the Americans Chalk-Bates are in the lead with 222.20. The young Georgian duo is only in 12th place. Bronze went to the Italians Guignard-Fabry (216.52).
