The Brazilian was released on bail, but is still detained. The MP’s argument concerns the risk of fleeing Spain
The Spanish Public Prosecutor (MP) has brought an action to prevent the provisional release of Daniel Alves. Convicted of rape, the player was released from prison last Friday, after paying a bail of 1 million euros (around 5.4 million reais).
Daniel Alves’ departure, however, did not happen. The athlete’s defense did not make the payment within the deadline and the player remained in prison. Release was scheduled for Monday, but at this point it is uncertain.
The thesis of the parliamentary prosecutor’s office is that there is a risk that Daniel Alves will flee. If he is released from prison he will have to surrender his two passports, the Brazilian and the Spanish one, as well as appearing weekly in court. The Public Prosecutor, however, understands that the Barcelona idol could still try to escape.
Daniel Alves was sentenced to four years and six months for raping a young woman in a nightclub in late 2022 in Barcelona. The trial took place in early February this year and lasted three days. However, the decision was subject to appeal.
