Netherlands: Authorities arrest Pegida leader after desecrating a copy of the Koran

AA / Rotterdam / Abdullah Asirani

Dutch police arrested Edwin Wagensveld, the leader of the extremist anti-Islam movement Pegida, this Wednesday for insulting the Koran, the Muslim holy book.

According to a police statement, Wagensveld dragged a copy of the Holy Quran hanging from a dog’s leash down a street in the city of Arnhem.

Authorities added that Wagensveld violated a ban on demonstrations imposed on him by Arnhem municipality last week due to the risk of burning a copy of the Koran to public order in the city.

Afterwards, Wagensveld announced on social media that he would travel to the city to protest despite the ban, prompting the Arnhem municipality to ban him from entering the city for 6 months.

Wagensveld traveled to Arnhem on Wednesday to attend a hearing in municipal court after challenging the ban.
