Moscow warns of EU plan to impose heavy tariffs on Russian and Belarusian grain

AA / Moscow / Elena Teslava

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned on Friday that the European Union’s (EU) plan to remove tariffs on grain from Russia and Belarus would worsen global food security.

In a statement published on Telegram, Zakharova said that the actions of the West have already caused difficulties in the global food market.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday that the European Commission has begun preparations to introduce tariffs on agricultural products from Russia and Belarus.

“Look, how worried is he about hungry countries? How can such measures contribute to improving food security in the world?” – Zakharova asked, asserting that they will in no way worsen the global food situation already aggravated by the West.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said EU plans to impose tariffs on grain from Russia and Belarus needed further review and analysis of their impact on food safety.

“It remains to be analyzed how much and in what time frame it will be implemented and whether it will actually be implemented or not. It is premature to draw conclusions,” he emphasized.

The European Union has decided to introduce tariffs on grain exports from Belarus and Russia, following a series of protests by farmers in Europe demanding a halt to duty-free Ukrainian food exports and rights.

Farmers said that low-priced Ukrainian agricultural products are destroying agriculture in EU countries, especially those that share a common border with Ukraine.
