Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that the Vostok research station in Antarctica’s far south was “one of the most modern and best equipped” on the continent as he took part in the inauguration of its new winter site.

Putin then thanked everyone who contributed to the construction of the station’s new winter quarters, including the Russian natural gas company Novatek.

He also described the opening of the new winter site as a “significant and significant event” for Russian scientists specializing in the polar regions, specifying that this event concerns both Russia and its allies.

“The new station will strengthen cooperation between scientists of different countries, become an open platform for solving current problems in the field of nature and environmental studies, and, of course, for the promotion of joint scientific research innovation programs within the Russian Federation. and Belarus,” he added.

Vostok Station was established in 1957 and is one of five active Russian research stations in Antarctica. It is located above Lake Vostok, the largest subglacial lake on the continent, and is primarily known for being the place where the lowest natural temperature on Earth has been measured, namely -89.2° vs.
