This medieval village with landscapes worthy of a postcard is one of the most beautiful villages in France

Did you know that there is a little-known place in the Lot department that is nicknamed “the little Versailles”. This is the charming village ofAuthoritative. Nestled at the bottom of a cirque, this village, surrounded by two 150m high cliffs, has even obtained the label of “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. And for good reason, the place, renowned for its medieval architecture and its breathtaking nature, between postcard landscapes and magnificent waterfalls, is undoubtedly worth the detour.

Why is Autoire nicknamed “little Versailles”?

As explained West France, this quiet corner has long served as a vacation spot for notables, residents of Saint-Cerré, the neighboring town. This is why it is called “little Versailles”. The place also has a medieval castle attached to the cliff (the Château des Anglais), certainly a thousand miles from that of Louis XIV, but which is one of the emblematic constructions of Autoire. The village also has very beautiful gardens, very well maintained, which can recall in certain aspects those of Versailles.

What to do in Autoire?

Strolling through its narrow streets, you come across traditional stone houses and sometimes come across nice viewpoints which offer magnificent panoramas of the surrounding countryside. The Cascade d’Autoire, located just outside the village center, is not to be missed if you venture into the surrounding area. This waterfall, more than 30 meters high, tumbles down a series of rocks. You still have to take a hiking trail of around 1.2 km to get there. The opportunity to treat yourself to a nice walk.
Autoire is also surrounded by lush nature and rolling hills of natural splendor, making it an excellent destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and picnicking. The village will please all those wishing to treat themselves to a peaceful and idyllic retirement and to (re)discover the beauty of rural France.

Note that Autoire is located near the castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux and the medieval town of Rocamadour, which are all places to discover immediately.
