Are you tired when you get up? Find out how to gain 30 minutes of sleep

Stress at work, breakup, health problems, many factors can cause difficulty falling asleep. We ruminate, we toss and turn without being able to find deep sleep. Researchers at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, USA, may have discovered a natural solution. In their study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, they suggest that daily consumption of a glass of cherry juice could increase sleep duration by 30 minutes in people suffering from insomnia.

To reach this conclusion, they involved 15 healthy people (8 men, 7 women) aged over 65 years. For a period of 2 weeks, these participants were asked to drink a 230 ml glass of cherry juice every day in the morning (between 8 and 10 a.m.) and a second 230 ml glass before going to bed. There is then a 2-week break, after which the participants drank a so-called “placebo” drink in the same quantity for two weeks as well. During this trial phase, researchers analyzed each participant’s sleep using a polysomnograph, a device that records sleep phases, breathing and body movements during the night. Subsequently, participants were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their level of fatigue, drowsiness, anxiety and depression…

What results for this study?

Scientists have shown that the total duration of sleep after drinking just 2 glasses of cherry juice is 418 minutes (either 7 hours) compared to 388 minutes (i.e. 6:30 a.m.) before the experiment and 409 minutes (i.e. 6:45 a.m.) with the placebo drink. With the integration of cherry juice into your daily life, the duration of your awakenings could be reduced by 17 minutes, like the participants. So, are you going to go buy some?

The cherry juice given to participants was made from Montmorency cherries, a variety of tart cherries. Each glass contained the equivalent of 50 cherries. These cherries have “ a relatively high content of melatonin, a substance that regulates sleep ». According to the researchers, the impact on the participants’ sleep could also be linked to the fact that these dark circles are very rich in anthocyanins (pigments responsible for their red color). “ Dare anti-inflammatory agents that may be closely linked to sleep modulation“. However, we must be vigilant and not completely trust this type of study without other complementary opinions.
