According to a Reuters report, the counterfeiting of Ozempic is suspected to be linked to three cases of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized thousands of fake Ozempic units circulating in the legitimate U.S. supply chain, but the agency has warned that counterfeit products may still be available on the market.

Some online retailers supplying over-the-counter drugs and pharmaceutical pharmacies are the sources causing the most concern to medical experts.

How does Ozempic work?

The FDA encourages patients and healthcare professionals to double-check Ozempic boxes and avoid using products with lot number NAR0074 and serial number 430834149057.2

The FDA and Novo Nordisk, the company that makes Ozempic and Wegovy, have shared images on social media comparing fake and real drugs to help patients recognize the authentic products.

Differences: the real (left) and the fake (right)

An original Ozempic pen will not stretch when you try to set the dose with the dial. Fake Ozempic boxes may contain spelling errors, and the batch number on the box may not match the product concentration listed on the same box and pen. The label on a counterfeit pen may also be of lower quality and may not adhere well to the pen.

Fake needles were also found in some of the samples seized by the FDA. These needles cannot be sterilized, which increases the risk of infection.

A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk told Verywell that the company has filed 12 lawsuits against compounding spas, medical or weight-loss clinics, and pharmacies to “cease and desist false advertising, trademark infringement, and illegal sales of compounded products.” . products claiming to contain semaglutide”.

Compound medications sometimes contain different amounts of the active ingredient than the traditional version. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, but the engineered versions have been found to contain semaglutide sodium, semaglutide acetate and “unknown impurities.”

If you think you have a fake medicine, stop taking it and contact your doctor.
