Furniture and household items: how to furnish your home on a budget?

Furnishing a property is not cheap, but some actions can help save money in the process.

Many people’s dream is to own their own house or apartment. Those who find it difficult to purchase a property, however, are not always able to move into a new, fully furnished home. This is because furnishing a house can cost a lot.

The government Lula da Silva (PT)for example, spent R$26.8 million with renovation works, purchase of new furniture, materials and household utensils for the Palácio do Planalto, the Palácio da Alvorada, the Official Residence of Torto and the Palácio do Jaburu in 2023. The numbers come from the Transparência Portal and Siga Brasil.

Although the amount spent to furnish the Palácio do Planalto is not a parameter for other houses, the amount spent demonstrates that furnishing a property is not cheap, especially if you choose quality furniture. OR Earth consulted financial advisors to find out how to furnish a property on a budget.

Some actions can help save money in this process, such as, for example, doing financial planning in advance and looking for furniture in different stores, both online and physical. To save money on your home furnishings, financial educator Aline Soaper recommends keeping three things in mind:

  • How much money is available to invest in furniture and household items?
  • Which lines present the best cost-benefit ratio within the budget you have available.
  • Research prices before buying. Compare prices from online stores to physical stores.

“If you cannot allocate a good sum of money to furnish your home, consider purchasing used items. Prioritize purchasing the most essential items and wait a while to finish purchasing the others. Finally, it is important to evaluate credit lines, considering that these installments will have an impact on the balance sheet for months”, advises Aline Soaper.

Thiago Godoy, financial educator at Rico, also suggests that people on a limited budget should initially look for the most important furniture for their daily life, such as a bed, a sofa, a refrigerator, a table and a stove. Additionally, he reinforces the importance of researching prices well before purchasing.

“To furnish a house on a budget, you have to be creative, patient and do a lot of research. You have to make a list of priorities, put the furniture in order of priority and then start doing research to compare prices in different stores.”

Multifunctional furniture

In addition to prioritizing the most important furniture and comparing prices in stores, Godoy recommends considering multifunctional furniture, where the person can make it serve more than one thing, more than one purpose. The expert takes the famous sofa bed as an example.

“Multifunctional furniture is an alternative to save space and money. The sofa bed, for example, can be used as a sofa in the living room and when you are at home you can also make it function as a bed,” says Godoy.
