Haddad cites dependence on Congress and avoids confirming a fiscal target of 0.5% of GDP in 2025

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad on Tuesday avoided confirming the maintenance of the primary surplus target of 0.5% of gross domestic product in the budget guidelines (LDO) bill to be sent to Congress ( GDP) for 2025.

In an interview with CNN, the minister said that maintaining the target depends on the measures currently being developed in the National Congress.

“At the request of (Senate) President Rodrigo Pacheco, and later at the request of (House) Speaker Arthur Lira, bills were introduced, both by the government and by parliamentarians, to achieve a balance,” Haddad said.

“I think this will define the future trajectory… The main outcome depends (on the measures discussed in Congress),” he added.

The government has until mid-April to send the 2025 LDO proposal to Congress.

“We will define the pace of the carriage in the next few days with the National Congress, just as we will define the trajectory from now on. Minister Simone preparing the LDO. This topic will be discussed in light of what is happening in the National Congress, of what is already happened in the higher courts”, underlined the minister.

On Tuesday evening CNN broadcast some excerpts of the interview with Minister Fernando Haddad. The full text is expected to be published on Wednesday afternoon.
