Brazil’s potential for green hydrogen production boosts economy and sustainability

By turning energy surplus into opportunity, Brazil emerges as a leader in green hydrogen production and leads the transition

Summary

Brazil stands out on the global renewable energy scene as it has the potential to produce nearly 2 billion tonnes of green hydrogen, generated through the use of clean electricity, allowing it to generate energy surpluses and boost the Brazilian economy through exports and investments .

OR Brazil stands out on the global renewable energy scene with its potential to produce almost 2 billion tons of green hydrogen, according to the Ministry of Energy Mining. This resource, generated by the electrolysis of water using clean electricity, has become a promising and sustainable alternative in the global energy transition scenario.

The world’s energy matrix is still heavily based on fossil fuels, making the search for renewable energy sources an urgent priority. In this context, Brazil stands out, not only for the extensive network of hydroelectric plants in operation, but also for the significant growth of solar and wind energy in recent years.

With the increase in renewable energy production, combined with the existing hydroelectric infrastructure, Brazil is headed towards an energy surplus scenario in the coming years. Juliano Gonçalves, electrical engineer and head of the cable division at Megger Brasil, explains how this translates into practice.

“Although there have been investments in this sector, many of them took a long time to be approved, mainly due to the bureaucratic process and also due to the meticulous construction of an entire market to sell these energy sources. However, the demand for energy and the growth in consumption of these renewable sources have not yielded the expected results. In this case the (positive) consequence is an energy surplus until 2030,” he explains.

This surplus can be used strategically to increase the production of green hydrogen, adding value to the national energy sector and strengthening the country’s position as a leader in clean energy.

Green hydrogen, produced domestically, not only helps reduce the carbon footprint, but also represents a profitable business opportunity. With excess energy on the market, electricity prices tend to fall, benefiting consumers, stimulating economic growth and competition in the market to sell raw materials more profitably.

“Moreover, green hydrogen production can attract international investments and partnerships, further boosting the Brazilian economy,” warns Juliano.

Countries such as the United States have already shown interest in this emerging market, which could mean guaranteed demand for Brazilian green hydrogen.

In a global scenario of energy transition, Brazil stands out not only for its abundance of natural resources, but also for its strategic vision to use them in a sustainable and profitable way.

“There is as much interest in purchasing this hydrogen as there is for large multinationals coming to Brazil to produce their products here, thanks to our clean energy, also allowing exports. Furthermore, there is the possibility of using hydrogen here in the country, which contributes to a strategic partnership, which goes beyond the commercial aspect,” concludes the expert.
