“Brazil is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change,” says Alckmin

The vice president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckminstated today that, while rich countries are the most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, poorer countries, which have infrastructure delays, are those who suffer the consequences most climate changes.

After recalling that 2023 was the warmest year in the world in 174 years of meteorological measurements, Alckmin named Brazil among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with a “more delicate” situation in the North and Northeast regions . He stressed that two-thirds of Brazilian municipalities are affected by climate change.

Opening of the seminar “Brazil towards COP 30?carried out by Globo Publisher, Alckmin reiterated Brazil’s commitment to both the fight against climate change and decarbonization. He also highlighted the opportunities and comparative advantages of world transition towards cleaner energy sources.

The vice president said that Brazil is the protagonist of three of the most important debates in the world right now, listing, in addition to the climate agenda, also food security and energy security.

The renewable source of electricity – of which 55% comes from hydroelectric plants and 35% from solar and wind energy generators – will open up, according to Alckmin, countless investment opportunities in the country in the context of the transition towards a low-emissions economy of carbon.

On the other hand, he underlined, the country’s priority must be deforestation, which is responsible for 50% of Brazil’s emissions. Alckmin cited the 50% reduction in deforestation in the Amazon in 2023, the first year of his term, as evidence of the government’s success on this front. “A curve that was growing fell by 50% in the first year,” the vice president underlined.
