Easter egg prices vary by up to 159%

Easter is approaching and a Procon survey provides data on prices in 2024. But first let’s remember an unusual episode, which happened in 2023. A man lost 10 thousand euros, the equivalent of 56 thousand reais, by eating a chocolate egg.

British YouTuber Adam Davis was in his van when he started recording a video and decided to eat the chocolate without knowing that it was one of 280 products awarded by the company “Cadbury” in stores across the country.

When he realized his mistake, he said he didn’t regret it because he was hungry. “Who else can say they ate 10 thousand euros in 30 seconds? Money comes and goes, but the story of epic failure lasts a lifetime,” Adam joked.

In Brazil, as far as we know, there is no award-winning chocolate, but here it is not lacking at exorbitant prices. At this time, with high demand, prices tend to increase. And eggs are also gaining new versions, many of them sophisticated.

For this reason, it is not uncommon to find memes on social media that make funny references to the prices of chocolate eggs.

For Easter 2024, however, Procon carried out a search in Sao Paulo on 11, 12 and 13 March, considering 115 products from 8 online stores. And there was a drop in the price of eggs. According to the survey, from 2023 to 2024, the kilo of Easter eggs decreased, on average, by 15.52%, from R$ 318.26 to R$ 268.87.

However, other chocolate formats have seen price increases. Between 2023 and 2024, chocolate became more expensive, on average, by 8.76%, going from R$150.92 to R$164.14 per kilo.

The increase in the price of chocolate bars/tablets is on average 8.30%, going from R$72.90 to R$85.77.

And the old advice to research pricing is on the rise. After all, the price variation reaches 159% for the same product, depending on the store. A 150g strawberry Arcor Bon Bon Easter egg, for example, cost R$69.90 on the Magazine Luiza website, while it could be purchased for R$26.98 on the Andorinha hypermarket market

Arcor is a more popular brand. Ovos da Lacta, Garoto and Nestlé have versions of eggs with varying prices, some more affordable. A 170g Laka egg, from Lacta, is sold in America, for example, for around R$35.

Compared to chocolate bars, despite the increase in this type of product, it is still worth opting for the bar, given that each 98 g bar, for example, costs R$ 6. But the effect of a chocolate egg it has no equal. year.

Some eggs, however, are high-end, with high prices: see some examples of chocolate eggs that are inaccessible to most people. The 365g Ferrero Rocher Easter egg is one of the most expensive in Brazil and costs around R$120. It is made of milk chocolate with hazelnut and comes with six branded chocolates inside.

The Ovo Exagero, from Copenhagen, which weighs 400 g, costs around R $ 160. The flavors can be: pistachio, caramelized, cat’s tongue and nhá benta.

Considered one of the best chocolate brands in the world, the Swiss company Lindt offers the egg from the “Nocciolatte” line, weighing just 350 g, at prices that vary greatly depending on the point of sale. And they reach the incredible figure of R$390 on the Magazine Luiza website.

The Mission Chocolate brand has 400g eggs that cost R$285.00. The flavors available are: honey bread, dulce de leche & salt and amazon (the famous semi-bitter).
