USA: the Senate approves a 1.2 trillion dollar package and avoids a government shutdown

The measure was approved by the US Congress in the early hours of this Saturday, the 23rd, and puts an end to the controversy over conservatives’ requests for greater spending cuts

WASHINGTON – The United States Senate missed the midnight deadline to approve a $1.2 trillion package to fund federal agencies, but approved the measure in the early hours of this Saturday morning, the 23rd, avoiding a stop, that is, the paralysis of public administration.

Approval of the measure by a vote of 74-24 capped months of drama in Congress, centered on conservatives’ demands for deeper spending cuts, completing the job of funding the government by the end of the fiscal year in September.

The measure, approved in the House on Friday the 22nd, now goes to the signature of United States President Joe Biden. “It’s been a long day, a long week, a very long few months, but tonight we funded the government,” he said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The list of consequences of the “shutdown” is long: soldiers and security agents do not receive their salaries, public offices and national parks remain closed, food aid does not reach its destination, among other things.

Dismissal?

In the midst of an election year, this budget has been the subject of a long debate between President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party and the Republicans.

White House and congressional negotiators finally agreed on a text, revealed Wednesday evening. But the proposal was immediately criticized by lawmakers sympathetic to former Republican President Donald Trump, who defend a very strict budget orthodoxy.

Additionally, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene made a “motion” to impeach Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson. She accuses him of “betrayal of the American people.”

The announcement fell like a political bombshell in Washington, although Greene did not set a timetable for the impeachment vote, which she called a “warning.” Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, was removed from office a few months ago in a very similar scenario.
