Below-average rainfall could boost energy prices in the second half of the year, CPFL CEO says

Gustavo Estrella also said that prices could come under pressure due to the increased energy load due to heat waves

Below historical average rainfall throughout this year’s wet period, limiting reservoir recovery hydroelectric plantsmay result in an increase in the price of power in the free market throughout the year, especially in the second half, predicts the CEO of CPFL EnergyGustavo Estrella.

However, he does not believe that there will be greater difficulties in terms of supplying hydroelectric plants, which still have comfortable storage levels.

“Unfavorable hydrology, especially in January, means we will have some pressure not on supply, but on pricing throughout 2024,” he said during a conference call with analysts and investors to present the company’s financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024.

The executive also mentioned the effect of the greater energy load, due to heat waves, which end up putting pressure on the prices charged on the free market. At the distributor, however, the tariffs are established in the tariff review processes regulated by the art National Electricity Agency (Aneel) and are not immediately affected by the phenomenon.

To the Station/Broadcast, the executive had already noted that, although the current hydrological situation puts pressure on prices, the structural excess supply of energy in the system still limits a significant increase in these values and ensures that the moments of greatest increase are limited. “It’s very delicate: if there is a change in the hydrology, the price returns to the minimum level,” he said.
