Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Friday that the government’s goal of eliminating the primary deficit this year depends on the performance of the economy and that, in this sense, the authorities are optimistic about the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024.
At a news conference in Sao Paulo, Haddad argued that the prospect of strong economic growth this year helps revenue, but he believed the government also depends on the approval of measures sent to Congress.
Haddad spoke after the Planning and Finance ministries predicted this Friday that the central government will end 2024 with a primary deficit of 9.3 billion reais, or 0.1% of gross domestic product (GDP), by the margin of tolerance established by the fiscal framework.
Financial markets, in general, have a much more pessimistic outlook for this year’s fiscal outcome.
