Black voters will help defeat Trump, Biden says in Philadelphia

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday launched a new effort to attract black voters in Philadelphia, a key voting bloc showing signs of weakness for Democrats ahead of November’s elections, and attacked his Republican opponent Donald Trump.

“With your vote in 2024, we will make Donald Trump a loser again,” Biden, accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris, said before a cheering crowd at Girard High School, a historic boarding school founded to serve the poor white kids it placed ended its policy of racial segregation in 1968.

Black voters have historically voted for Biden and Democrats, and were a major reason for his victory over Donald Trump in 2020, but polls show they may be less favorable towards him this year as the two rivals face off again . in the November 5 elections.

Biden rattled off a list of his policy accomplishments, such as implementing a diverse cabinet, becoming the first Black female Supreme Court justice and pardoning people convicted of marijuana possession. “Promises made, promises kept,” Biden repeated several times.

Democrats have long counted on strong turnout in Philadelphia — and, more recently, its suburbs — to offset weakness in more conservative parts of Pennsylvania, a narrowly divided state that Biden narrowly won in 2020.

The campaign’s concern is not that the city’s black voters will vote for Trump, but that many of them will decide not to participate in the election.

This is Biden’s third trip to Philadelphia – and sixth to Pennsylvania – this year, continuing to focus heavily on the crucial state where he polls slightly behind Trump.
