France wants to “put the prospect of recognizing a Palestinian state into a useful dynamic”

French President Emmanuel Macron said he wanted to “put the prospect of recognizing a Palestinian state into a useful dynamic” during a phone interview with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

According to a press release issued by the Élysée on Wednesday, the head of state “recalled France’s support for a reformed and strengthened Palestinian Authority that can carry out its responsibilities in the Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, for the benefit of the Palestinians.” “

He also “expressed his sincere condolences to the Palestinian people for the unbearable human toll of the operation in Gaza and following the new tragedy represented by the bombing of the Rafah refugee camp.”

“Both presidents demanded an immediate end to Israel’s military intervention in Gaza, as requested by the International Court of Justice. There are no safe zones in Rafah today. The President of the Republic underlined France’s determination to work with Algeria and its partners in the Security Council so that it can firmly express itself in Rafah, as well as to continue efforts around the French resolution project.

France also believes that “it is all the more urgent to restart peace efforts and put an end to the systematic postponement of the implementation of the two-state solution and the creation of a Palestinian state.”

With a view to possible Palestinian recognition, Emmanuel Macron called on Mahmoud Abbas to “implement substantial reforms” and stressed “Israel’s responsibility not to prevent the transfer of revenues from the Palestinian Authority.”

“Finally, the leaders discussed the situation in the West Bank. The President of the Republic strongly condemned the violence committed there against the Palestinian civilian population. He recalled his plea to the Israeli authorities to put an end to it. The continuation of the policy of colonization intensifies this violence and constitutes a serious violation of international law. He reiterated France’s decision to impose new sanctions against violent IDPs, together with its partners,” the press release said.

This position comes at a time when, in the face of the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, France has been questioning the possibility of recognizing Palestine for several days.
