Turkey asks Italy to recognize the State of Palestine

Erdogan and Meloni spoke by telephone

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressed on Wednesday (29) his desire for Italy to be “on the right side of history”, following the example of Spain, Ireland and Norway in recognizing Palestine as a state.

During a phone call with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Erdogan also added that “pressure must be increased to stop Israel’s brutal attacks against Palestine and force the Israeli government to comply with international law”.

The information was released by Ankara.

In addition to immediately ensuring a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, Turkey’s priorities include the release of hostages and detainees and the continued delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, Erdogan added.

Relations between Ankara and Rome, as well as global and regional issues, were also discussed during the call.

Also this Wednesday the Rafah region, in the Gaza Strip, remains under attack by Israel. According to witnesses, tanks have been seized in the region and are operating.

Palestinian sources say some aid depots were set on fire. According to Reuters, residents said continued Israeli shelling overnight destroyed many homes in the area, where most people fled following the Israeli evacuation order. .
