The USA destroyed a drone on the Red Sea

AA / Washington / Dyar Guldogan

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday that it had “successfully” destroyed a drone over the Red Sea, a device launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen.

“It has been determined that UAS (unmanned aerial systems – drones) pose an imminent threat to merchant shipping in the region,” CENTCOM said on X.

These measures were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters “safer” for US ships, coalition ships and merchant ships.

Yemen’s Houthi group is targeting cargo ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea in a show of solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli attack since October 7, 2023.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s busiest oil and fuel shipping routes.

Earlier this year, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter Houthi attacks.
