Russia has up to 25,000 troops trying to invade Khasiv Yar area, Ukraine says

Russia has a force of between 20,000 and 25,000 soldiers trying to storm the town of Khasiv Yar and surrounding villages in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian army said on Monday, describing the situation in the area as difficult.

Ukraine has full control of Khasiv Yar, which sits on a strategic high ground in the partially occupied Donetsk region, but Ukraine’s commander-in-chief has said Russia wants to capture the city by May 9, when in Ukraine celebrates Soviet Victory Day.

“The situation around the city is difficult, but it is possible to control it… Our defenders are receiving reinforcements and stabilizing the line,” said Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Eastern Military Command.

“There are between 20,000 and 25,000 Russian soldiers who are trying to invade Chasiv Yar and the surrounding settlements,” he said in televised comments on public broadcaster Suspilne.

The capture of Chasiv Yar would bring Russia closer to two strategically important cities under Ukrainian control, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Russia is already moving ahead, but long-delayed U.S. military assistance is expected to reach Ukraine to ease a critical ammunition shortage within days, following final approval expected this week.

“It is difficult for our soldiers, but receiving the necessary assistance will balance the situation,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram.
