Mayoral candidate killed in Mexico as political violence grows

A ruling party mayoral candidate was killed Monday in central Mexico during an event on the first day of her campaign, despite asking authorities for protection without receiving a response.

A city council candidate was initially believed to have been shot dead in the incident, but the Ministry of Security later said he was missing.

On Monday evening, Gisela Gaytán had just presented her strategic security plan during a demonstration in Celaya, Guanajuato, when some armed men opened fire, killing her instantly.

The Guanajuato attorney general’s office said it was investigating the killing. No arrests were made.

It is unclear why Gaytán became a target, but the state of Guanajuato has recorded the highest number of murders in Mexico in recent years and has been the scene of wars between criminal groups.

Mexican elections have been marred by political violence for years, but the numbers suggest the situation is getting worse. Dozens of politicians and candidates have been killed ahead of the 2021 midterm elections.

There was a 236% increase in electoral political violence in the country between 2018 and 2023, according to Mexico City-based research organization Civic Data.
