The federal teachers union continues the strike for redeployment and contests the government’s agreement with the entity

Andes calls for reopening negotiations and an increase in 2024; Profifes signed an agreement with the government for an increase only in 2025 and 2026

Teachers of federal educational institutions have decided to continue the strike for a salary increase and demand the reopening of negotiations with the federal government, which on Monday 27th signed an agreement with a union representing part of the category.

The proposal accepted by the Federation of Teachers’ Unions of Federal Institutions of Higher Education and Basic Technical and Technological Education (Proifes) provides for an adjustment in two installments scheduled for 2025 (9%) and 2026 (3.5%). ), without an increase in 2024. According to the Ministry of Management and Innovation (MGI), other entities will have more time to sign the agreement.

The National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes-SN), however, says that almost all meetings with employees have decided to reject the proposal. The institution claims that its base is made up of 90% teachers from universities, institutes and federal education centers. At least 59 institutions remain on strike

To put pressure on the reopening of negotiations, Andes called an event in front of the MGI headquarters, in Brasilia, on June 3. The entity defended itself counter-proposal presented to the government that salaries will be adjusted by 3.69% in August 2024, 9% in January 2025 and 5.16% in May 2026.

The union has also scheduled a new round of meetings from 5 to 7 July to evaluate the direction of the mobilization.

Andes also questions the legitimacy of Proifes to represent the category and says that the agreement with the government “conflicts with the decisions of the base”, as stated by Gustavo Seferian, president of the entity.

Proifes, for its part, states that the federated unions representing teachers from 11 universities and federal institutes have decided to join the proposal, including the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the Federal University of ParĂ¡.

The strike at universities and federal institutes has lasted for more than a month
