Conmebol fines San Lorenzo for racism in the match against Palmeiras

Buenos Aires Club will have to pay the equivalent of almost R$624 thousand

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has punished San Lorenzo for acts of racism committed in the duel with Palmeiras. The match in question, played on 3 April, was valid for the first round of the Libertadores group stage and ended 1-1.

The sanction applied by the body that governs football in South America was a fine of 120 thousand dollars (equivalent to R$ 623.5 thousand, at the current exchange rate). As usual, the amount will be deducted from the total prize money that will be awarded to the Argentine club when its participation in the Libertadores ends.

In addition to the sanction in question, Conmebol clarified that, in the event that such situations are repeated, the punishments will also be more severe. Such as the partial closure of a sector of stands or even operation behind closed doors. The Buenos Aires representation has seven days to appeal, asking for the decision to be annulled.

The racist act appears in a video circulated on social media and occurred shortly after Palmeiras’ equaliser. Shortly after the equalizer celebration, a fan of the Brazilian club caught a woman making gestures as if she was imitating a monkey. The person responsible for the action looked directly at where the Palmeiras fans were.

Next Thursday (30th), the two teams meet again for the last round of Group F where Palmeiras is looking for the best season of the tournament. This is because the ranking and leadership of the group are guaranteed with 13 points, six more than the vice-leader, San Lorenzo itself. In turn, Ciclón must win (or at least draw) or risk losing their place in the round of 16 against Independiente del Valle. The Ecuadorians, who will face Liverpool (Uruguay) in the final phase, have four players and only two goals less.
