Diniz analyzes Fluminense defenders and asks for improvements in aerial delivery: ‘Avoid crosses’

Vegetti was uncomfortable throughout the classic against Vasco, and the coach stresses that the defensive system must evolve for the rest of the season

In the classic against Vasco, coach Fernando Diniz decided not to rely on improvisations in the Fluminense lineup. On the field, the team beat Vasco 2-1, at the Maracanã, and broke the streak of thirteen consecutive matches without winning the classics. Manoel and Felipe Melo were the starters. Despite the triumph, the defensive system once again had difficulties with the aerial ball, especially with the attacks of Vegetti, author of the Cruz-Maltino goal.

“The players did well. Since the match had already gone, I wanted to see if Vasco had scored another header, which they had the opportunity, the question would be in this sense. Obviously, when you have defenders, you have more chances to avoid the aerial ball, but Vegetti scored one and had other chances,” he said.

Throughout the match the Argentine striker, from Cruz-Maltino, really bothered the defense. He then projected himself into the area and constantly tried to disturb Fábio’s goal with his head. According to the Italian commander’s point of view, the defensive system must avoid crosses, especially when facing a team specialized in this type of play.

“The defensive system must improve. We are doing some things well, especially in high marking. But when we lower the block, we concede crosses very easily. When we face a team specialized in this type of play, which is the Vasco case, the first thing is to prevent the crossing from taking place”, he concluded.

Look at the calendar

At the moment Fluminense has 4 points and leads group A of the Libertadores. In this sense, Fernando Diniz’s men will take the field on Thursday (25th). The team, therefore, will play at 7pm (Brasilia time), in La Nueva Olla, and will face Cerro Porteño, in Paraguay.
