France: third evening in Paris to condemn the “genocide in Gaza”.

AA / Paris / Ümit Dönmez

Thousands of people gathered this Wednesday, for the third evening in a row, in the heart of the French capital to condemn the “genocide in Gaza”, Anadolu correspondent reported.

Demonstrators gathered in Paris’s Place Saint-Augustin raised Palestinian flags, as well as banners reading “No to genocide in Gaza,” “Silence, we kill,” and “Netanyahu, war criminal.”

Demonstrators also chanted messages of support for the Palestinian population, especially the Gaza Strip, such as “Palestine will live, Palestine will conquer”, “Gaza, Paris is with you”, or even “We are all Palestinians”.

At the start of the demonstration, the French Palestine Solidarity Association (AFPS) issued a press release to organize a rally tonight at 18:30 (UTC + 2) in Paris, Saint-Augustin, to condemn what it calls “genocide” committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.

AFPS condemned the dramatic situation in Rafah and the entire Gaza Strip, where Israeli bombardment continues despite an order by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to immediately cease military operations. AFPS calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire as well as sanctions against Israel.

In a press release dated May 27, 2024, the AFPS criticized the response of the international community and France in particular.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged by Israel’s attacks” but did not condemn Israel or announce sanctions, the association reported. The past week has seen major diplomatic developments, including the arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders and the recognition of a Palestinian state by three European countries.

“Since May 6, a million people have again been internally displaced to escape the incessant bombardment of a completely immoral army. Nowhere in Gaza is safe, Israel indiscriminately and disproportionately targets every place where civilians are welcome. Israel continues its activities for 7 months. The escalation of the genocide carried out by Gaza against the Palestinians, women and children are subjected to daily and incessant bombardment, hunger strikes organized by Israel,” we can read in the AFPS press release.

AFPS calls for urgent action and stresses that inaction in the face of atrocities in Gaza could undermine the credibility of international institutions and international law. The association calls on France to recall the Israeli ambassador and suspend the association agreement between the European Union and Israel.

This demonstration in Paris is taking place in the context of increased violence in Gaza. The ICJ’s orders, although legally binding, were not followed by the Israeli government. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the Israeli attack killed at least 35,800 Palestinians, mostly children and women.
