The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Tunisia celebrates National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

On the occasion of National Sovereignty and Children’s Day on April 23, the Turkish Ambassador to Tunisia, Ahmed Misbah Demircan, invited the Turkish community to celebrate this day, which has been celebrated for 95 years, at the embassy headquarters in cooperation. with Maarif International School and Yunus Emre Institute in Tunis.

On April 23, 1929, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, decided to dedicate this national holiday to children. The law declaring April 23 as a national holiday was passed on April 23, 1921, one year after the opening of Turkey’s first Grand National Assembly.

“Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens,” Ahmed Misbah Demirjan said in a speech during the ceremony. “That’s why we celebrate national sovereignty and our children at the same time,” he said.

In a statement given to Anadolu, the Turkish diplomat recalled: “This holiday is especially important for Turks. This day symbolizes the republic, the democratic transition period, where every citizen has the right to vote, choose his government and participate in the government.

Dedicating April 23 to children, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk suggested they symbolically take power for a day.

In formal uniform, school students Efe Mersin, Nermin Nedret Turan, Abdullah Taha Yurdusven, Kerem Ersoy and Ahmed Duzcu set the stage to assume the functions of Ambassador Ahmet Misbah Demirkan, Undersecretary Belgini Ergunesh, Military Attache, Colonel Aydin Bayarurism. “Our children are our future,” said the Turkish ambassador, before asserting, “Our children will take over the government one day, we must know how to empower them, teach them that they have an important role in society.”

Ahmed Misbah Demirjan also said that “on the day of April 23, ministries, municipalities, public institutions and even the president himself will give children strength for one day”.

Tunisian Visal Duqman, married to a Turkish citizen, does not hide his enthusiasm to celebrate this holiday with his four children. “For six years, my children have been studying in Maarif school and they celebrate this holiday in their school. This year, at the initiative of the embassy, ​​parents were able to share the holidays with their children,” he told Anadolu.

He continued: “This celebration at the embassy is an opportunity to bring the Turkish community together and get to know the new ambassador.”

On March 22, Ahmet Misbah Demirjan presented the credentials of the new ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Tunisia to the Head of State of Tunisia Kai Said.

Thus, the Turkish diplomat replaced Çaglar Fahri Çakiralp, who said goodbye to the president on December 30, 2023, in connection with the end of the mission.
