Regional tensions at the center of the meeting between the German chancellor and the Israeli prime minister

AA / Berlin / Erbil Basay

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a German government official said on Sunday.

During the exchange, Netanyahu briefed Scholz on developments in the region, Steffen Hebstreit said in a statement.

Olaf Scholz, for his part, emphasized the importance of preventing the further escalation of tensions and the expansion of the conflict throughout the region.

The German chancellor also commented on the decision of the EU Council of Heads of Government and State to impose new sanctions against Tehran following hostilities between Israel and Iran. He assured that the German government will continue to consult closely with the G7 and EU countries.

Berlin has been criticized internationally for supporting Israel as part of the latter’s offensive against the Gaza Strip.

Israel launched a deadly offensive against the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas. Tel Aviv says the Hamas attack killed up to 1,200 people.

Since then, figures from the Israeli offensive show that approximately 34,100 Palestinians have been killed and 76,800 others injured, 85% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, with severe shortages of food, drinking water and medicine, and that 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed by the United Nations, according to the United Nations. is destroyed.

Israel continues its murderous war despite the adoption of a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, as well as ignoring the first proceedings against it at the International Court of Justice for the “crime of genocide”.
