The UN warns of a possible serious escalation in the Middle East

AA / Hamilton / Merve Aydogan

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the possible escalation of tensions in the Middle East following an attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission in the Syrian capital Damascus.

This was announced by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric during the daily press conference on Tuesday.

He noted for the first time that after the incident, there was a telephone conversation between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

“We are very concerned about a possible serious escalation that we are already seeing beyond the escalations,” he said.

Dujarric also reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s call for all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.

Seven people, including two generals from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, were killed yesterday in an airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. In addition, 6 Syrians were among the dead. Thus, the total number of dead has increased to 13.

While Iran claimed that Israel had staged the attack, the administration in Tel Aviv continued to remain silent.

When announcing the retaliatory action of the attack by Iran, he said that the United States is also responsible.
