Railgun being developed for Navy warship — 5 cool things it will be able to do

The rather impressive railgun you see in the video below may seem like something out of science fiction movie or novel, but the Navy has made it real. Indeed, the Pentagon has already test fired a smaller laboratory scale

Railgun ammo is just metal slugs – no propellant or explosives. It does its damage purely through energy from velocity, not an explosive charge. Long-term, railguns along with gas guns look to be our best chance for launching payloads into space

At least this program didn't get cut. From the Office of Naval Research: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb. 28, 2012 By Grace Jean, Office of Naval.

It fires a 40-pound metal slug up to 5600 miles per hour from New York to Philadelphia, slamming into its target with 32 times the force of a "1-ton car being thrust at 100 mph." Railguns aren't sci-fi anymore.

No better proof of this point can be found than Tuesday's announcement by the Navy that they are testing a new railgun, a weapon that has the potential to change military strategy, foreign policy, and America's role in foreign affairs in this decade
